Live Generously with Intention: The First Beat of Aspire to Give®
In our 2026 kickoff blog, we shared something both simple and profound: our aspiration to give is embedded in us. It isn’t just a personality trait for a select few. In a very real way, we are wired to give — to contribute, to help, to lift, to encourage, to build, and to make life better for someone else.
So, as a follow-up, let’s take the next step together and explore Principle #1 — the first beat of three that shapes Aspire to Give:
Live generously with intention.
These words may sound straightforward, but when you apply them to real life — its choices, challenges, and constant change — they become a powerful way to live. Because the truth is, you are already giving every day. The question is: are you giving in a way that aligns with meaning, direction, and purpose?
What It Means to Live Generously
Living generously begins with awareness. It is the moment you recognize that generosity isn’t only what you do when you volunteer or donate. Generosity is expressed in the everyday ways you show up for life and for others — often without applause, without recognition, and sometimes without even realizing it.
Whether you are giving to family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, or the wider community, you are constantly offering pieces of yourself outward. And that’s because giving is not just something we do — it’s part of who we are.
At the heart of living generously is recognizing the four gifts you carry. Think of these gifts as a personal satchel you take with you into every season of life:
-Time
-Talents
-Financial resources (treasure)
-Trusted relationships
When you live generously, you begin to see that these gifts are not accidental. They are meaningful. They are powerful. And they matter. Even more than that, when your giving is aligned with goodness, you come into harmony with something deep inside you — your natural capacity to do what is right, helpful, and life-giving.
What It Means to Live with Intention
If we are wired to give, then living generously is only the beginning. The next question becomes personal and important:
What is my purpose?
To keep this simple and easy to understand, it helps to think about purpose in two levels — just like strategy and tactics.
Your Big Purpose is your life strategy. It is the larger meaning of your life, the deeper direction you’re becoming, and the contribution your life is designed to make beyond yourself. Big Purpose takes time to form.
Most people don’t discover it overnight. It is shaped through experience, reflection, relationships, challenges, and growth across the journey of life.
Your small purpose, however, is your tactical intent at each crossroad. It is what matters most right now. It is the “next right step.” It helps answer questions like:
-What is life asking of me in this season?
-What is most important at this crossroad?
-How do I give well in this moment?
Intention becomes the bridge between your gifts and your direction. It helps you aim what you have toward what matters most.
Why Life Transitions Matter So Much
Life doesn’t move in a straight line. It moves through seasons and shifts, ups and downs, expected turns and unexpected disruptions. Along the way, every one of us faces transitions — some exciting and some painful — but all of them meaningful.
Life transitions can include moments like:
-Emerging into adulthood
-Starting a new job or career
-Moving to a new place
-Getting married or divorced
-Having children
-Experiencing a job loss
-Retirement
-Major health challenges
Each of these crossroads brings a fresh set of choices, challenges, and changes. And at every crossroad, the question becomes more than, “What should I do?” It becomes, “Who am I becoming?”
For a young adult with minimal life experience, the first major pivot point can feel overwhelming. It’s hard to think about “Big Purpose” when you’re trying to figure out direction, identity, confidence, and stability.
But here’s the encouraging truth: you don’t have to solve the whole strategy of your life at once. You simply need to discover your small purpose at the crossroad you’re standing in today. Over time, as you keep moving forward, your Big Purpose becomes clearer — not because life gets easier, but because you gain wisdom through the journey.
We Are Wired to Give — So the Real Question Is Direction
Since giving is already part of you, the real challenge is not whether you will give.
The real challenge is whether you will give with intention.
Because if you don’t choose direction, you may still give — but you may give by accident. You may give out of pressure. You may give out of habit. You may give in ways that drain you or pull you away from what truly matters.
Living generously with intention means you begin to direct your four gifts toward the small purpose of your current crossroad, while staying aligned with the Big Purpose that is slowly taking shape across your life.
In practical terms, this means:
-You recognize the gifts you carry
-You pause long enough to ask what matters right now
-You choose to align your gifts with that small purpose
-You trust that those choices will shape your Big Purpose over time
And when you live this way, you begin to experience a deeper kind of fulfillment—not the fleeting satisfaction of staying busy, but the lasting peace of living with meaning.
