The Power of Mutual Benevolence: A Story from the Breakfast Bar

Jul 17 / Aspire to Give Academy

At Aspire to Give® Academy, we believe that every person carries an innate aspiration to give — a kind of generosity DNA embedded deep within the human spirit. This belief is not just part of our educational philosophy. It’s the cornerstone of how we define personal growth, purpose, and success in life.

But sometimes, it’s the smallest of encounters that reveal just how powerful that inner drive to give truly is.

A Story from Richmond, Virginia

My wife Suzette and I regularly visit Richmond, Virginia several times a year. On a recent trip, we stayed at a familiar suburban hotel — one of those places where the complimentary breakfast is a small, predictable ritual.

As any seasoned traveler knows, there’s often a breakfast attendant working quietly behind the scenes — keeping food stocked, wiping down counters, and making sure guests are taken care of. At this particular hotel, the attendant’s name was Diane.

Over several visits, I struck up a conversation with her. I learned that she had been working in that role for over 10 years. I let her know how much I appreciated her care in how the breakfast area was kept — always clean, well-stocked, and welcoming. I simply expressed interest in her work and offered sincere gratitude for her efforts.

That’s when something unexpected happened.

Diane smiled and said, “Wait a second — I’ve got something in the back.” She returned moments later with a plate of fresh pastries, beautifully wrapped, clearly set aside for someone she cared about serving. These weren’t your standard-issue muffins — they were special. And then she added, “Let me know the next time you’ll be back — I’ll get fresh fruit for you.”

Sure enough, the next time we returned, Diane remembered. Without saying a word, she disappeared into the kitchen and reemerged with a bowl of freshly sliced strawberries, covered in plastic wrap. “They’re great with yogurt,” she said.

Those strawberries weren’t anywhere on the buffet. She had remembered. She had prepared. And she had given — generously, thoughtfully, intentionally.

A Lesson in Mutual Benevolence

This seemingly simple interaction was, in truth, a profound reminder of something we teach at Aspire to Give® Academy: the concept of mutual benevolence. When we show genuine interest in others — no matter their role, background, or status — we unlock a ripple effect. We awaken something shared and deeply human: the desire to give back, to care in return.

My appreciation and interest in Diane’s role sparked something in her. And in return, she gifted me with a moment of thoughtfulness that I’ll never forget. It was an unintended but beautiful consequence of simply noticing someone and letting them know they matter.

That is the power of our innate aspiration to give.
