The Rest of the Story: A Watch, a Legacy, and the Spirit of Generosity

Apr 17 / Aspire to Give Academy

In January 2025, Auburn alumnus David Smith made a discovery that would bridge generations, rekindle friendships, and inspire a movement of generosity. He didn’t know it at the time, but an old Army lacrosse watch tucked away in his nightstand would do far more than tell time—it would tell a story of purpose, connection, and the enduring spirit of giving.

David had inherited the watch decades earlier from his grandfather, Paw Paw, who owned a pawn shop in Daleville, Alabama, near Fort Rucker. Paw Paw, a retired Army veteran, ran the shop not for financial gain but as a way to help young soldiers make it from paycheck to paycheck. He often held onto pawned items longer than the allotted time, hoping the soldiers would return to reclaim their belongings. The watch — engraved with the name ā€œG. Doepke – Lacrosse – U.S.M.A. – 1971ā€ — was one of those unclaimed treasures.

For years, the watch sat quietly in David’s possession, its story unknown. But as David examined it one morning, something stirred in him. ā€œI saw the inscription on the back, and I felt compelled to find the owner,ā€ David recalled. This wasn’t just about returning a watch; it was about honoring the past and keeping his grandfather’s generous spirit alive.

A Journey of Generosity Begins
David’s search for the rightful owner didn’t take long. A quick online search led him to Greg Doepke, a West Point graduate, former Army lacrosse player, and founder of Aspire to Give Academy—an organization dedicated to empowering individuals at life’s crossroads through generosity and purpose.

David sent Greg a text with a photo of the watch, but there was no immediate response. Undeterred, David followed up with a second text, and this time, Greg replied. ā€œI was stunned,ā€ Greg admitted. He couldn’t recall losing the watch but as memories resurfaced, he was transported back to his days on the Army lacrosse team, the camaraderie of his teammates, and the discipline of military service.

Greg and David spoke at length by phone, and soon after, David mailed the watch back with a heartfelt letter that read:

ā€œIt would do my heart a lot of good, and my mother would be proud to know that the G. Doepke who played lacrosse at West Point in 1971 now has his watch back. The return of your watch keeps my grandfather’s memory and his nature alive.ā€

When Greg opened the package and held the watch after more than 50 years, he realized that this was no ordinary reunion. This was a powerful testament to the Auburn spirit of generosity, which David had carried forward from his days as an Auburn student.

The Watch That Sparked a Ripple Effect
David’s act of kindness didn’t just reconnect Greg with a piece of his past—it ignited something even greater. ā€œDavid’s generosity inspired me to reconnect with my former lacrosse teammates,ā€ Greg said.

Dormant friendships came back to life as emails turned into shared memories and stories. The watch had become a catalyst for rekindling bonds that had been silent for half a century.

But the impact didn’t stop there. Greg, moved by David’s selflessness, decided to use this story as the inspiration for a new initiative at Aspire to Give Academy—this blog ā€œAspire Speaks,ā€ dedicated to sharing stories of purpose, generosity, and human connection.

ā€œDavid’s actions reflected everything I’ve spent my life teaching—that intentional generosity creates ripples far beyond what we can see,ā€ Greg explained. Through Aspire Speaks, the Academy showcases real-life stories of people whose small acts of giving had transformed lives, just as David’s had done for Greg.

A Legacy of Love Lives On
As Greg reflected on the journey of the watch, he realized that its story was woven deeply into the fabric of his own life. Auburn had played a pivotal role in his journey. He met his wife, Suzette, at Auburn, and their family’s legacy was rooted in the Auburn tradition. ā€œAuburn is more than just a university—it’s a family, a community that believes in the power of the human touch,ā€ Greg said.

For David, Auburn had always been about community, connection, and lifting others up. In 2005, he was part of the Auburn team when Aubie the Tiger won the national championship for Mascot of the Year. The camaraderie, spirit, and joy he experienced during that time had left a lasting impression on him—one that shaped his understanding of generosity.

David’s mother, Lisa Gammill Smith, also felt the power of her father’s legacy through David’s actions. ā€œMy father, David’s Paw Paw, had a kind and giving heart, and he would be so proud of David,ā€ she said. ā€œDavid inherited that same kind and loving heart. I am so proud of him, and I’m happy the watch has made its way home.ā€

A Note of Gratitude and Beyond
In a heartfelt note to David after receiving the watch, Greg wrote:
ā€œYes! Your grandfather’s spirit and ā€˜Aubie’ live on as reflected in your spirit of generosity. I’ve also contacted the Jacksonville Public Affairs Office of the United States Coast Guard and will send them a link to the story so they can share it too!ā€

Greg didn’t just stop at thanking David—he took action to ensure that this story of generosity and connection would inspire others far beyond Auburn and West Point.

The Rest of the Story: More Than Just a Watch
What started as a simple act of returning a lost watch has grown into a movement of generosity, connection, and legacy. Through David’s kindness, Greg’s vision, and the spirit of both their families, this story now serves as a powerful reminder that:
āœ… Generosity transcends time and generations.
āœ… Small acts of giving can create lasting impact.
āœ… The spirit of community lives on when we choose to honor and reconnect with others.

As Aspire Speaks continues to share stories like this one, the ripple effect of intentional generosity will inspire others to recognize their own pilot light of purpose and take action to make a difference.
ā€œAt Auburn, we believe in hard work, education, and the human touch. And sometimes, that human touch starts with a simple text, a lost watch, and an Auburn man who believed that generosity, once given, never truly ends.ā€
