Live to Learn, Light, and Love

Jun 4 / Aspire to Give

As basic as this question may seem, it carries a much deeper meaning. What is your purpose for living?

We often fall into a daily routine. When we take time to think about why we get up each morning, it becomes an opportunity for personal reflection or spiritual engagement.

Let me propose that our purpose for living is to learn, to light, and to love.

Live to Learn

The early stages of our life journey are when we live to learn. We learn from our parents. We learn how to walk and become independent. As we grow, we hopefully learn to be responsible and accountable for our choices.

We learn through our formal education in school and college, as well as through career-related training. We learn from teachers, mentors, athletic coaches, our friends’ parents, and others who influence us. We have lived to learn.

Live to Light

As life continues, we keep learning. We gain lessons from the school of hard knocks, from trials, and from tribulations. But there comes a time when we not only live to learn, but also live to light.

What do I mean by “to light”? When we live to light, we teach others by setting an example. We light the pathway for our children. We illuminate the path for those we lead. When done in an appreciative and positive way, it allows those we influence to become better versions of themselves.

This is especially evident if you are a parent, grandparent, teacher, mentor, or anyone in a teaching role. You become the light that enables others to live their lives in a positive and giving way. When we live to light, we become the teacher rather than the student.

Live to Love

Throughout this journey of life, hopefully, we learn to love. Most often, this is first reflected in the love of our parents. They bestow love upon us, and through their example, they show us how to love.

Through the love demonstrated by teachers, coaches, mentors, and others, we learn to love. Through their examples of giving, we learn not only how to love, but also how to light.

Our purpose for getting up in the morning is to learn through our life journey. It is also to light the way—to lead and teach others so that they, too, can learn, light, and love. Ultimately, we live to learn and to light through the common theme of love. To love life and to make a positive impact on the lives of others is the end goal.

So, why do you get out of bed in the morning?

The answer may be as simple as this: “I get out of bed in the morning to learn, to light, and to love.”

Now, let’s do some good!
